Peeking Giraffe

Usually I don't paint or draw anything from reference. Although for this one, inspiration came through a photograph of a giraffe on Unsplash.com. I was browsing through random images on the website and I came across this image. I loved it right away. At first, I decided to paint the whole image as it is but eventually I just took the subject and made my own scene, as you can see above.

This giraffe gave me a soothing feeling. It's like the giraffe is looking for some company although it could be possible that he is around some of his friends but this photo could not capture them. Anyway I tried to keep that theme in my illustration. The giraffe has wondered off to towards the shops and he's trying to peek inside. Maybe he's looking for someone.


In the original picture, warm tones are prevalent, which is very soothing to the eyes but I could not keep that. Mainly because of the scene revolving around a beach. I had to go with a bit of blue and green tint throughout the scene.

I think I've messed up with perspectives a little bit around the edges but overall  it was a fun experience. As they say, it is not about the destination, rather it is about the journey. And I had loved painting this in GIMP.
