I am not really that old, despite that I hate TikTok. It would be strange if I was among a minor fraction of people with this opinion but a cursory search over the internet would prove that although TikTokers are a very diverse demographic but people who carry disdain towards the platform are also a diversified demographic.
Although I would not go as far to say that Tik Tok destroys brain cells, sometimes what’s considered funny and acceptable on this app is very much delinquent enough to be identified as a felony.
A few talented artists and skit writers on Tik Tok are nowhere near the heaps of lip-syncing and lame dancing videos. Though all sorts of garbage content can be found on other social media or video hosting platforms like Youtube but the thing I hate about TikTok is the lack of originality. Most TikTokers produce the same content every day and then happily watch others do the same and somehow none of them is aware of the triviality of it. Although, if they were really fanatic about the absurd, I would praise them for it but I don’t think they are doing it ironically.
Here are a few of the totally unnecessary trends on TikTok and we should at least look down on these.
The Skull-Breaker Challenge
Teenagers put safety fourth in their set of priorities right after adrenaline, validation and excitement. The SkullBreaker Challenge is a wild trend that includes 3 individuals lining up and agreeing to jump in front of the camera. Usually, the middle one is unaware that the other two will push him while airborne, hence resulting in falling over their head.
It has resulted in negative effects like cyber bullying. Jumping the bandwagon may cost the school a nuisance but at least it’s an upward social move for the participants.
Fear of missing out is a cruel motivator in this case, as some students have gone to ER while doing this challenge.
Ever since Tiktok has decided to remove such content from the platform. The sheer shortage of attention span among TikTok users is to be blamed for the inception of such trends. With the infinite scrolling nature of the platform and never-ending video clips, everything becomes boring so quickly for youngsters. To spur some excitement, they tend to catch a whiff of wrong ideas.
Penny Challenge
If you thought that playing with electricity could be perilous, you might appear to a certain Tiktok audience, which doesn’t regard it as such at all. Putting a coin between the electric socket and phone charger to see the sparks. It’s often done by dropping a coin from above and upon touching the prongs of the plugged-in charger, sparks are generated. If you are lucky, that will be it. Although some had temporary vision impairment due to unexpected sparks and short circuits.
Of course, most of the time, circuit breakers prevent a major mishap and any hazard is avoided but burning up the whole place is a possibility. At times, the coin could get stuck in between prongs and draws too much current and becomes a serious danger.
Tooth Filing Challenge
Maybe a rift in the cosmos or crack in the Universe made some people think that it’s a great idea to scuff their teeth with a nail filer. Who needs the natural enamel on teeth when you can get some likes on Tik Tok by putting your dental health into jeopardy. The dentists have advised to not do such experiments on the teeth as permanent damage is assured with this.
It reminds me of an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, where Amy Santiago went to a dentist to fool her boss but the dentist told her that her teeth had been damaged. She was surprised to find out that it had been a result of overbrushing. If over-brushing can do it, there’s no way a nail filer will not harm your teeth.
Benadryl Challenge
Food and Drug-related authorities in the USA had to issue warnings against the excessive use of Benadryl following the death of a teen who had consumed more than the recommended dosage of this antihistaminic drug.
Multiple teenagers had posted videos of themselves gobbling down tens of Benadryl Pills, which resulted in fatal consequences for a few of them. Although Benadryl can cause some sleepiness if consumed according to the doctor's advice. This over-the-counter medicine can cause heart problems, seizures and eventual death if consumed over-enthusiastically.
These TikTokers were experimenting without regard for personal health hazards. The reason they started doing this was to post the effects like tripping and hallucinations on TikTok after overdosing on Benadryl. Serious medical problems as a result of this sound like a pretty hefty price to pay for some praises and awes from strangers on the Tiktok.
Blackout Challenge
This challenge involves holding your breath until you pass out. If you find this asinine and pointless, you are definitely mature enough to see the pointlessness of this. It’s definitely possible and I hope recommended, to practice prolonging your breath by diving and swimming underwater without putting your health in jeopardy.
Holding your breath is a great exercise to avoid the stench of filth from bothering you in a public restroom. Although no sane person would do it to the point of blacking out and dropping down on the soiled floor. Somehow the Blackout Challenge on TikTok has led the teenagers to believe that losing consciousness as a result of putting your nerves in danger is still a game. By no means it’s a feat of strength and discipline if instead of making you stronger, it’s destroying your brain.
I am paraphrasing here but some British comedian once said that what doesn't kill you, makes you very weak.
